The Galaxy is in your console..
Pros: Storyline, Graphics, replay value, Not for idiots
Cons: A few glitches, Not for the mass media :D
The bottom line: Wonderful RPG by the legendary Bioware. Spectacular replay value.
Full review
Mass Effect was another one I was waiting on. November was a big month for me. We'll, I've just now been able to put it down and put enough time into writing a review for it. So here it is, Mass Effect.
Storyline
I have been playing video games for many, many years now. And I can say confidentially this game has a wonderful story. I've been talking to a few of my friends about it the past few days and we've been discussing how it may be one of the greatest games in story telling yet. Perhaps not THE, but defiantly in the big league. Basically, you play as Commander Shepard, an Alliance soldier on board of the Normandy, an Alliance ship, and early into the game you are inducted into the Specters, the Galaxy's universal police and Special Tactics Force. You are above the law and you may complete your mission in any way possible without question. You are sent to discover a rouge Specters (Saren) true intent with cooperating with the Geth. The Geth are a race of synthetic beings that were created by the Quarians (A fictional race in the game) but the Geth rebelled and sent their creators into exile. Now the Geth are under control of Saren, whos connection with the them is unknown.
Graphics
While in this section Mass Effect can not say its better than the likes of Gears of War, but it still holds a strong fight. Don't get me wrong though, the graphics are absolutely beautiful. Very high quality but the characters faces is what really got me in this department. They are sometimes life-like with all their details.
Game play
The game play is great, but what can you expect. Its made by Bioware and any RPG lover such as myself knows this legendary company. The game plays very much like Knights of the Old Republic. It plays like a third person shooter but has its oblivious tactical and RPG elements.
Lets start with the RPG elements though. At first you pick a class, with the base classes as Soldier (Warrior-like), Engineer (Support-like), or Adept (Magic-user)((They use "Biotics". Think "The Force" from Starwars)). There are also three other classes that combines some elements of the three base classes, Infiltrator (Soldier/Engineer), Van Guard (Soldier/Adept), and Sentinel (Adept/Engineer). Your whole party will level up with you, including inactive ones, saving you a lot of hassle. When you gain levels, you get skill points which can be put into different categorys such as pistols, rifles, throws, lift, overload, decryption. Next, there is the tactical components which are a bit less apparent in the game. Your team of 2 others can be controlled with the directional pad. Up sending them to a certain location, left recalling them, right targetting their attacks on one enemy, and down telling them to stay. Finally there is the shooter aspects. You have the choice of picking four different guns, Pistols, Shotguns, Assault Rifles, and Sniper Rifles. Each class has its different specialty in weapons and performs the best with those weapons. You can duck and take cover like most games now-a-days. Nothing exciting or revolutionary for this.
Now for the miscellaneous. I'm on my third run through on this game and I'm not getting tired of it yet. Theres a bunch of new dialog when choosing different paths which make the game have wonderful replay value. One of the greatest achievements in this game is the talking part. It sounds weird, but truly this shows how games are getting much more life-like. You have a choice between a few things to say, the more harsh ones leading to Renegade points and the softer choices give you Paragon points. You can cut off the persons speech but selecting your choice before hand (Choices will show when you have the chance to cut them off when you press A) and then speak anytime but pressing X. While this doesn't really effect your conversation, its an improvement in dialog for video games. Perhaps in the future (Mass Effect 2?) developers will add in negative responses given for interrupting an npc, but back on course.
Control Scheme
The controls for Mass Effect are pretty basic and easy to get used to. Right trigger to fire, right bumper to choose an ability, left bumper to choose a firearm, hold A to run, ect, ect. It's nothing complicated.
Sound
The sound and voice acting are phenomenal. Voice acting especially, is one of the best I've seen in a video game. As for the sound, its great. I didn't pay a lot of attention to the music during fight scenes as I was concentrating on the battle, but all of it fits wonderfully with the game and are all works of art.
Parents Section
This one is defiantly rated M for a reason. Its all rather subtle, but its there. The language, drinking, sex, check. If you parents out there think your children are mature enough for it, then by all means its a wonderful game.
