Since I saw a number of zombie movies growing up, I was really excited when I heard about a zombie action game coming out for the Xbox 360. However, I was a bit hesitant knowing that Capcom had created this game. While they've done a great job on other genres, this was a different type of game for them. The game they created is fairly entertaining, but has a few extremely annoying problems.
The gameplay is fairly straightforward. You are a photographer named Frank who is inside a mall that is overrun with zombies. You have a number of goals, the primary of which is to survive until your helicopter ride arrives in 3 days. You must travel through the mall, killing thousands of zombies along the way, to accomplish a number of different missions. While doing this, you find a number of "survivors" that you must then escort back to safety. You also find a handful of "psychopaths" that you must defeat. In the mall, you find lots of useful items to use. There are all sorts of weapons, books that give you bonuses and food/drink to boost your health. You also get bonuses for taking "good" photographs.
There are a number of things that make this an entertaining game. The graphics are outstanding. The zombies look great and give it a great creepy atmosphere. Also, Capcom was extremely creative with the variety of items/weapons and attack moves in this game. Although not all of them are useful (try killing a zombie with a toy laser sword !), they still provide a lot of laughs. There is also a great variety of different missions to keep you occupied.
Unfortunately, there are a handful of EXTREMELY annoying issues with this game. First is the game save system. There is only 1 game save slot. What makes this so bad is that the entire game is timed. So, you sometimes have to save the game without knowing whether or not you took too long to arrive at that save spot in the game. Furthermore, the save points are fairly far apart and you often have to fight through hundreds of zombies just to get from one save point to the other. The second problem is the item inventory. One single inventory is used for weapons, books and food/drinks. It also only starts with 3 available slots. This should have been separated into 3 different categories. Very often during an intense battle with zombies, my weapon will break and it switches to my gallon of orange juice. That's not exactly a great weapon to be using against 20 zombies surrounding you ! That brings up another point. The weapons have terrible life spans. Typically, a weapon lasts for about 30 zombie kills. Since the mall is filled with zombies, one item usually lasts about 45 seconds before it breaks. Books can help extend the life of an item, but as I mentioned earlier, these books use inventory slots themselves. So, that makes them less useful than it would seem. Finally, the cell phone on your character rings continuously and it's extremely annoying. When you are busy battling dozens of zombies, the last thing you want is to be annoyed by cell phone ringing.
I still find the game quite fun to play because I happen to be a fan of zombie films and I have fun using the different items in the game. Still, I'm disappointed that Capcom made some very bad gameplay decisions. Fixing the game saves and separating the inventory slots would have made this game far more enjoyable. It's worth picking up if you enjoy movies about zombies or can find it at a good discount. It's a decent game, but it's not one of the best Xbox 360 games.
